If you're thinking about purchasing bunk beds and not sure where to begin, we are going to share the complete guide on purchasing bunk beds.

Bunk beds are a popular choice for saving floor space, adding a unique design to a room, and giving children their own individual space as they grow together.

When it comes to purchasing a bunk bed, here are a few things to think about, that will impact your decision:

  • What age range will the bunk beds be for?
  • What features do I need?
  • What aesthetic do I like?
  • What room space do I have?

What age range will the Bunk Beds be for?

Let's start with the recommended age range. Bunk beds (especially the top bunk) are generally recommended for ages 6+.

Some bunk beds offer additional safety features such as higher railings and stairs instead of ladders, but it's important to consider each individual child when making a decision.

If bunk beds are not a suitable option just yet, you can also look at lower beds with storage such as a canopy bed or cabin bed.

Now what if you are looking for a bunk bed for teens or adults, and want something a little less...child-like? An incredible option is a built-in bunk bed.

Built-in bunk beds are a more permanent structure of the room- adding superior strength and timeless designs- they can be created for and used by teenagers and adults alike.

What features do I need?

What features are important to you is the next important question to ask. For example, if you are purchasing a bunk bed to try and maximise room space- you can look into bunk beds with additional storage like the Premier Bunk bed below.

Bunk beds with additional storage reduce the need for added chest of drawers and bedside tables, so you can make better use of the available room space.

Here are a few features that might be important to you:

  • Safety
  • Storage
  • Strength
  • Durability
  • Number of people
  • Bespoke (designed for the specific room)

If you're looking for a bunk bed that fits a small or awkward space- a bespoke design is always advisable so you can get the best bed to fit your room.

What aesthetic do I like?

When it comes to the aesthetics of a bed, everyone has very different tastes. Do you prefer a simple, minimalist and clean design...or do you prefer elaborate themed beds like a castle bed

The benefits of minimalist designs is that they are timeless, and can be dressed up to suit any room, interior, and aesthetic.

The benefit of a themed bed? Well, who wouldn't want to have a castle for a bed growing up...let's be honest! These designs do tend to age-out quickly compared to a minimalist style bed, but can still be enjoyed for years.

Many businesses do offer bespoke design like PSW Furnishings, so you can be sure to find a bed that fits your individual needs.

What room space do I have?

The final important question that will decide what bunk bed will be a good fit for you, is the space available in your room.

To help narrow down your options of beds, we have a simple room measuring tool that will direct you to multiple styles and options of beds and bunk beds that will fit your specific room.

Some Frequently Asked Questions on Bunk Beds:

How much weight does a bunk bed hold?

This will depend on the specific bunk bed. PSW Furnishings beds are installed by expert fitters (as opposed to self-installed beds) using strong materials and fixings, and our designs can confidently hold 200lbs+ without a creak.

Other designs may not be as strong, so be sure to check the individual product's manufacturer details for more information on maximum weight threshold.

How tall do ceilings need to be for bunk beds?

This will vary again depending on the bunk bed. Our bunk beds are quite tall at 1800mm high, to allow for plenty of room in the bottom bunk.

Your ceiling will need to be tall enough to allow for head clearance for sitting up in the top bunk! Most standard ceilings are around 2400mm high, but if you have a smaller ceiling, you may wish to opt for a lower bed.

Is the top bunk difficult to make?

Any bed at height will be slightly more difficult to make than a ground-level bed. However, providing the bunk can take an adult weight- they aren't too challenging.

For example, our customers expressed that they found making top bunks more challenging- so we re-designed our bunk beds to provide additional clearance on the sides of the mattress, to make dressing the bed easier and more manageable.
